Partnering with USAA, the ex-Army member and former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl left tackle hosted a flag football tournament for military personnel stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. This event preceded a game in Madrid between the Commanders and Dolphins, making it a special occasion for everyone involved.
"It was incredible," Villanueva shared in an interview. He highlighted the natural connection between football and the military, and how USAA leverages this bond. The location held personal significance, as Villanueva grew up in the area, even using the tournament field for off-season workouts. This event allowed him to connect with his roots and work with USAA.
Villanueva's NFL journey is nothing short of extraordinary. But here's where it gets controversial: He wasn't always destined for gridiron glory. Before his NFL career, Villanueva played rugby in high school and then college football at Army, where he excelled as a tight end. After an unsuccessful tryout with the Bengals, he joined the U.S. Army, serving three tours in Afghanistan and earning a Bronze Star Medal for his bravery.
In 2014, Villanueva decided to chase his NFL dream again. After a stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he caught the eye of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, he was signed to the Steelers' practice squad. When injuries struck, Villanueva stepped up in Week 6, beginning a streak of 114 consecutive starts, 97 of them with the Steelers. During this time, he earned two Pro Bowl selections and was a key player on teams that won three division titles and reached the brink of the Super Bowl in 2016.
Villanueva's impact on the Steelers extended beyond his individual achievements. He played a crucial role in Le'Veon Bell's record-breaking rushing performances and Ben Roethlisberger's historic postseason passing game.
When asked to sum up his NFL career, Villanueva simply said, "Hilarious." He reflected on the improbable nature of his success, a former soldier, not a top college player, making it to the NFL. He mused about the unlikely path he took, a Spanish kid playing football in the U.S., and how he could inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of their background.
