A coveted chase just got bigger for Alex Ovechkin fans. The Capitals captain has a new one-of-one hockey card headed for release in Upper Deck’s premium 2024-25 The Cup set.
Upper Deck, the NHL’s exclusive trading card maker, will drop its most deluxe box of the year this Wednesday. The 2024-25 The Cup product features several legendary players with rare one-of-a-kind Exquisite patch autographs tucked into the thousands of boxes produced. Ovechkin’s card stands out as especially special, graded by collectors as a potential white whale.
Ovechkin signed the card in gold ink and added an 895 inscription, a nod to his historic goal that broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL scoring record. The momentous inscription ties the card to a milestone many fans thought would never be surpassed.
Upper Deck teased a first-look video on social media, highlighting some of the year’s top hits. After briefly flashing icons like Mario Lemieux and Mark Messier, the video zeroes in on Ovechkin’s one-of-one card. The design blends black, white, and gold and features a three-color jersey patch in red, white, and blue from one of Ovechkin’s game-worn jerseys.
Among annual releases, The Cup is known for its high desirability, and this year’s box is priced at a striking $1,500. Each box contains a single pack of six cards.
While the standout Ovechkin card will surely captivate collectors, the big hunt for 2024-25 The Cup centers on Macklin Celebrini’s rookie patch autograph, limited to just 99 copies.
Beyond the one-of-one Ovechkin patch autograph, Ovechkin appears across this year’s product in several sets. Expect on-card autographs and/or game-used patches, including multi-player cards featuring a dual autograph with Gretzky and a triple autograph with Nikita Kucherov and Kirill Kaprizov.
Other Capitals inclusions on the checklist (per Beckett) span John Carlson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Pierrick Dubé, Tom Wilson, Charlie Lindgren, Dylan Strome, Connor McMichael, Darcy Kuemper, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Aliaksei Protas, Sonny Milano, TJ Oshie, Rasmus Sandin, Ethan Bear, and Nic Dowd.
