Bold statement: Indie FM is expanding fast, transforming a quartet of Ontario signals into a unified network with a fresh, contemporary sound. But here’s where it gets nuanced: the rebrand isn’t just a cosmetic shift; it’s a strategic move to harmonize programming, talent, and audience engagement across multiple markets while preserving a distinct flavor from its Toronto flagship.
Indie FM marks the expansion of Chris Grossman’s Local Radio Lab branding from the AAA-format Indie 88 (CIND-FM) in Toronto to four additional Ontario stations. The former AC station FM 92 (92.1 CIMA-FM) in Alliston, FM 101 (101.3 CJML-FM) in Milton, FM 101 (101.5 CKMO-FM) in Orangeville, and FM 102 (CJFB-FM) in Bolton have all adopted the Indie FM identity. Each station continues to operate with a shared music log and an alternative-leaning Hot Adult Contemporary format, differentiated from the Toronto station yet unified under one brand umbrella.
General Manager Joel Grossman commented on the initiative, saying, “This rebrand has been a year in the making, and we’re excited to finally reveal what has been developing behind the scenes. Bringing all stations under the Indie FM banner enables us to roll out a refreshed talent lineup, updated programming, and cross-station contesting across the entire network. We’re proud of the direction Indie FM is taking, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone listening and supporting us.”
What this means for listeners is access to a broader pool of on-air personalities, more cohesive seasonal promotions, and a consistent listening experience across multiple communities—all while preserving the local flavors that make each station unique. It also invites discussion: Do you prefer a tightly wound, networked format with shared content, or do you value strong local autonomy even within a shared brand? Share your thoughts in the comments.
