A Musical Legacy: How Ace Frehley's Impact Lives On
The passing of a legend, Ace Frehley, has left an indelible mark on the music industry, with his influence reaching far beyond his time with Kiss.
In a heartfelt tribute, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready shared his personal connection to the late guitarist, revealing how Frehley's impact shaped his own musical journey. But here's where it gets controversial: McCready claims that without Frehley's influence, he might never have picked up a guitar.
"Ace Frehley was more than just a musician to me; he was an inspiration, a hero, and a friend," McCready wrote. "His solos were my playground, and I spent countless hours studying them."
McCready's journey began with a simple lunchbox. In 1977, Rick Friel, a fellow musician, introduced him to the world of Kiss, and specifically, Ace Frehley. "Rick was the first to tell me about Ace, and that lunchbox changed my life," McCready recalled.
The Influence of a Hero
Inspired by Frehley, McCready picked up a guitar in 1978 and formed a band, covering Kiss classics like 'C'mon and Love Me.' He described how his friends were equally obsessed with Kiss, buying their merchandise and discussing the band endlessly.
"Ace's solos were my guide, and I studied them year after year. His influence is all over Pearl Jam's 'Alive,' where I used the solo from Kiss' 'She' as a template," McCready explained. He even had the honor of jamming with Frehley on 'Black Diamond' at Madison Square Garden, a dream come true.
A Life-Changing Impact
"Ace, you changed my life. I wouldn't be here without your influence. RIP, my friend," McCready wrote. This tribute highlights the profound impact musicians can have on each other and their fans.
Frehley's death, at age 74, was attributed to a fall at his home. His Kiss bandmates, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, expressed their devastation, acknowledging Frehley's essential role in the band's history.
And this is the part most people miss...
While Frehley's musical prowess is undeniable, it's the personal connections and inspirations he fostered that truly define his legacy. McCready's tribute is a beautiful reminder of the power of music to connect and inspire generations.
