Create a treasure hunt and send clues to your friends

Instructions

What3Words is an app and website which helps you describe your location, we can use this to make a treasure hunt for our friends!

They have taken each 3m squared space in the world and given it a 3 word reference which never changes. For example Woodcraft Folk Head Office is ‘button.eggs.smile’.The Houses of Parliament are ‘driven.wedge.vibrate’. The Statue of Liberty is ‘planet.inches.most,’ and the Pyramid of Giza is ‘dreaming.munch.magnetic.

Have a look at what three words your home has, how about your school? Or your favourite place to go on holiday?

Treasure Hunt

This is a great way to cooperate together as a youth group or a group of friends and family without physically meeting – by setting up a what3words treasure hunt for each other.

What to do

  1. Make a surprise for your friend, this will be your treasure. You could decorate a stone, fold an origami peace crane, write a note, draw a picture or choose a small object or toy you would like to give away and put it inside a waterproof container.
  2. Decide where you are going to ‘hide’ the treasure for your friend. This could be at the local park or somewhere near to your friend’s home. It could be left in a space you like to be with your friend. For example, at the basketball court. However make sure not to leave it in a patch of stinging nettles or somewhere too open where someone else might pick it up!
  3. Go to what3words and work out the three words for the location where you have left the treasure. If you have a smart phone you can find the three words at the location. Or if not you can look it up on a browser from home.
  4. Place your treasure in position.
  5. Share the three word reference with your friend. To make it a bit easier you could also send over a picture of the general area where they need to search. Or to make it harder, you could leave a series of clues, each with the next three word location they need to go to. They would follow the clues until they finally find the treasure itself.

Take it further

How many pieces of treasure can you leave around? Could you take it further and make a scavenger hunt around your local town or park? Then your friends could follow it and find clues and gifts along the way.

It is great we are starting to have face to face activities again – make sure you and your group stay safe by following our latest guidelines on physical meetings.
