Championing British croquet: Lawn care for a perfect lawn (2024)

A perfect lawn is a vital factor in a game of croquet, and a croquet lawn requires dedicated lawn care to achieve the perfect finish.

Allett prides itself on helping people to achieve with its Complete Lawn Care System which features six interchangeable cartridges which turn a traditional mower to a specialist gardening tool. The system includes an aerator, a lawn brush, dethatcher, verticutter and a 10-bladed cartridge, as well as the walk-behind cylinder lawnmower, all in one machine which eases storage issues and reduces costs.

The first step in creating and maintaining a croquet lawn is scarification. Scarifying is a key way to ensuring your lawn is healthy and gloriously green and weed-free. The Allett scarifier cartridge gently removes moss and thatch, whilst also reducing weeds and preventing problems in the future. For lawns with severe problems and thick growth of dead matter, another cartridge in the system to use is the dethatcher.

Alternatively, for a means of removing thatch and dead grass, without damaging healthy areas, the verticutter can be used. This cartridge brings dead matter to the surface to be collected by vertically penetrating the soil by using large thin blades.

Another cartridge in the system is the lawn brush. This disperses and removes any mounds, lawn casts and other debris using a rotating brush mechanism that collects the debris and deposits it in the grass box, removing it from the playing surface. Allett recommends that brushing is carried out as regularly as possible to reduce the amount of debris spoiling the lawn, and that the brushes should sit approximately half an inch below the top of the grass.

Other top tips from Allett include regular mowing, with grooming, verti-cutting and/or brushing being undertaken on a weekly or twice weekly cycle to boost air movement and reduce thatch, as well as keeping an eye on irrigation so that the lawn doesn’t dry out, particularly for those with sandy soils.
