Allett recommends that brushing is carried out as regularly as possible to reduce the amount of debris spoiling the lawn, and that the brushes should sit approximately half an inch below the top of the grass.
Other top tips from Allett include regular mowing, with grooming, verti-cutting and/or brushing being undertaken on a weekly or twice weekly cycle to boost air movement and reduce thatch, as well as keeping an eye on irrigation so that the lawn doesn’t dry out, particularly for those with sandy soils.
An ideal mixture is - 80% Chewings Fescue, 20% Browntop Bent. Using Ryegrass strains or other sports field grasses described as 'hard wearing' or 'miracle growth coverage' which are quite suitable for Association or Rugby football, but too strong and wiry for croquet.

A tournament quality croquet lawn is cut at 3/8″ to 1/4” when conditions are good. A bowling green is cut at 3/16” to 5/32” for match days. As this is the extreme end of mowing to allow a ball to roll fast and true you should consider this as very low mowing indeed.

Though all plants need these three key nutrients to thrive, grass requires higher concentrations for proper growth. Of all three, nitrogen is the most important as that is what gives grass its vivid color and tremendous growth.

Using a garden fork, dig over the soil you've revealed and remove any stones. Add the levelling mixture to the exposed soil using a shovel, then compact it using your feet. Water the area to remove air pockets and add more mixture as needed. Smooth the levelling mixture out using the back of your soil rake.
In general, a cool season grass like fescue, rye or bluegrass is best for creating a striped lawn. Warm season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia don't bend as much, so the lawn stripes aren't as easy to see. You can use grass seeds or sod to create the right lawn. Keep your mower blade sharp as you cut.
